Yellow-Headed Amazon

(Amazona Ochrocephala)

Well known for their great singing and talking abilities, yet reasonably priced due to their willingness to breed in captivity the Yellow-Headed Amazons are a popular companion parrot. Although known to be temperamental birds, and more than occasional biters, these birds seem to possess an inner calm that sometimes allows them to recover from years of mistreatment much easier than many other parrots could. Occasionally these beautiful parrots develop problems with screaming and biting, but with good socialization they can be trained not to do so. They can be temperamental, sometimes protecting their human "mate" by attacking others who dare near that person, but again, training the parrot properly can help to prevent this problem. Females can be as aggressive as males, so it is best to be sure to lay the proper foundation with the Yellow-Headed Amazon from the start, to ensure a healthy loving relationship in the longrun. It should also be noted that the Double-Yellow Headed Amazons are known to be one of the "Hot Three", including Yellow naped and Blue Front. Double-Yellow Headed are known to become aggressive when sexually mature, between three years of age and eight years of age. The person who chooses to share their home with these birds needs to consider this ahead of time and prepare for it. For more information about the "Hot Three" please follow the link from the main Amazon page of the index.

A special thank you to Beth, for sharing the above photo of Sunnie with us. Sunnie is a double yellow-headed amazon who recently turned one year old in this photo.
