White Eyed Conure

(Aratinga Leucophthalma)

These little known darlings of the conure world are becoming popular quickly. With predominately green bodies, a spray of red feathers across the head, and the lovely white rings around their eyes they are easily enough identified. Enjoyable companion parrots, and wonderful acrobats they are becoming a favorite among conure lovers. Native to South America they still remain rather rare in aviculture, but watch out because they are catching on fast.

The White Eyed Conure needs a larger cage than one would initially suspect with this species, they are very active birds and need the room play. Providing plenty of toys and chewable's is a great way to keep them entertained while in the cage, but keep in mind that they need to be allowed to play outside the cage on a regular basis to be truly content. A playpen area or playstand is a great investment when sharing your life with one of these amazing little birds.

With a life span of 25+ years the White Eyed Conure is a bird that requires a commitment on the part of anyone who wants to share his or her home with one. Average length of these beautiful parrots is about 12.5 inches. One must remember that as a member of the family of Aratinga these darling parrots have the potential for extremely loud noise when they desire. Conures in general do not make great apartment dwellers.

A very special thanks to Kim, for allowing us to show off this photo of Heckyl and Jeckyl. We at Feathered Family are very proud to have played a small part in helping these two lovely parrots find their home with her. They are both just gorgeous!
