All organizations need a reason to exist, and Feathered Family is no different from any other. We are not here simply to take unwanted birds, as we would soon become overfull and could no longer provide assistance to birds in need if we did that. Instead, these are the things we do:
1. Providing a safe place for unwanted parrots to reside. This helps to keep the humane societies free of large numbers of unwanted birds, preventing needless euthanasia.
2. Carefully placing exotic birds in acceptable adoptive homes.
3. Working with exotic birds with behavior problems, to help correct them when possible so the birds may be placed into proper adoptive homes. By working with birds with behavior problems to correct those problems we can assist in the placement of these birds, rather than further flooding humane societies or euthanasia.
4. Providing education regarding exotic birds, their proper care and husbandry. This activity helps to disrupt the flow of behaviorally challenged birds who need sanctuary or temporary care at parrot rescues, instead allowing them to stay in their current homes.
5. Providing sanctuary for selected exotic birds with behavior issues too severe to be functional in a family atmosphere.
6. Providing educational presentations for schools, clubs and other childhood organizations. By providing these presentations we help to educate children to proper parrot care, helping to prevent future parrot abuse or neglect.
In the future, we hope to be able to:
1. Provide even more educational resources for owners of exotic birds via classes. These will include behavior modification, grooming techniques, proper care and husbandry. By providing these classes we will be able to further educate people regarding parrot care and prevent the need for the birds in their care to ever end up in sanctuary or rescue.
2. Provide grooming and boarding services at Feathered Family. By providing grooming and boarding in a family atmosphere we can help to prevent the behavior problems which can occur in large facilities, and prevent the spread of disease which is sometimes common in large facilities.
3. Provide foster homes, so that more parrots who are in need of homes have a safe place to be while waiting for a proper adoptive family to apply.
In short, Feathered Family is a no kill exotic bird rescue and sanctuary focusing on behavior issues and public education. We are dedicated to the health and well being of all companion birds, and strive each day to help keep all exotic birds safe and happy.
