Introducing Feathered Family's Volunteer to Adopt Program!We at Feathered Family realize that often people have a true and honest desire to share their lives with a parrot, but have no past experience with birds and need time to learn about them. This also allows people to evaluate if a parrot is really for them, if one will fit into their life, and if they can make the commitment it takes to share a lifetime with a bird.
We hate to turn a potential home away for lack of experience, so we have designed the Volunteer to Adopt program.
With this program persons interested in adopting who lack experience can volunteer with Feathered Family, getting hands on one on one experience with birds. You will learn everything from proper cage maintenance to nutrition, and much more. You will work with one of our Senior Volunteer Staff, who will help teach you, and who will also evaluate your progress and commitment to the program.
The program does require a deep level of commitment from you, this is not for the faint of heart.
You will be required to volunteer a MINIMUM of 2 hours per week, for eight weeks. You will be evaluated at the end of the eight weeks and if your program coordinator does not feel you are ready yet your program will be extended up to another eight weeks. If at the end of the second eight weeks you are still not prepared to provide for a bird at home we will end your program.
This program does not guarantee you an adoption, does not mean you will get a bird.
All of the other pre-screening must still be passed, you will be interviewed to allow us to decide if you fit into the program, and the adoption contract will still apply in full if you do adopt.
This program is more hands on than a day to day volunteer, and you will need to sign a release of liability waiver in case of injury while working with the birds.
If at the end of your program we feel you are indeed ready to have a bird in your home and life, but no bird at Feathered Family matches well with you we will keep your application on file and bring you back in when and if we find a bird that would be a good fit for you.
