Rose-Breasted Cockatoo or Galah Cockatoo

(Eolophus roseicapullus)

Beautiful parrots, who come in eye catching rose and pink tones the Galah are sometimes thought of as cautious birds, with an over developed sense of fight of flight. Unlike many of its Cockatoo cousins the Galah is not known for becoming a "love sponge" or "Velcro bird" but instead has more of a reputation for being a hyperactive child. That does not mean that there are no love sponge Galah's, or that all of them are full of energy, just that in general this is the case. Extremely intelligent parrots these little guys are known to be great escape artists, and it can be a fun challenge designing a lock that is capable of keeping one in. Galah's are reported to speak early in their lives, and have clear distinctive voices. Unlike many of the other Cockatoos Gallah seem to scream less often, usually limiting their yelling time to morning or evening when it is natural for all parrots to scream. It has also been said that the Galah sheds less feather dust than other Cockatoos, which is still a good bit compared to non powder-down birds. In the wild a Galah's social structure differs greatly from most parrots, they are raised after they fledge by the community, instead of being raised by their parents only. This knowledge is leading to more breeders raising the young parrots communally rather than in nest groups, and it has been reported that birds raised this way are generally less cautious as adults.

We want to thank Catherine Joubert very much for sharing her photos of Milo with us.
