Red Lored Amazon - Yellow Cheeked Amazon
Amazona Autumnalis Autumnalis
The beautiful Red Lored Amazon is less often seen in captivity than many other Amazon species. This is due to difficulties breeding them, not to disposition. Known to be quieter than many of the other Amazons, they are also reputed to have good temperament. With an ability to talk, and striking coloration, they are highly prized by those who share their lives with them.
One of the smaller Amazons, about the same size as a Blue-Fronted, they make delightful companions when raised properly and socialized. As with all Amazons they can get a bit louder in the spring, and more aggressive, due to hormonal fluctuations.
It is also important to note that it has been stated that the Red-Lored is the Amazon most often known for having beak deformities. These can be small issues, such as slight overgrowth, or severe such as beak malocclusion. It is believed at this time that the beak of the Red-Lored tends to grow extensively during hormonal season, and one should make sure that the bird is under direct veterinary care during this period to prevent any problems.
