Plum Headed Parakeet
Psittacula Cyanocephala
The smallest of the Ringneck Parakeet family, the Plumhead is a beautiful and often misunderstood bird. Most often kept as an aviary bird in the past they are becoming more common companion birds in our homes. While they do not enjoy much hands on attention they do enjoy time spent with people. Like all ringnecks they need large cages for their long tails, and generally do not do well sharing a cage with any other bird.

Plumheads, as they are commonly called, are known to be a relatively quiet bird. However, they do have a piercing contact call and can be noisy if unhappy. These active birds require plenty to do in order to stay entertained and prevent boredom behaviors.
It is uncommon to hear of a Plumhead that speaks well, perhaps they are just not interested in learning.
Plum Headed Parakeets are among the small group of parrots that can be visually sexed when mature. However, this does not work until the bird is at least two years of age. Male Plummies will develop the beautiful deep coloration on the head, while the females retain the grayish color of immaturity.
