Adopting a parrot

How wonderful you decided to adopt a parrot! There are so many who have special needs, and finding homes for them all can be a long and hard process. Adopted parrots have a very special brand of love to give, as they know what the loss of a home is like, and will treasure you all the more once they have truly bonded.

Adoption also allows you to get help selecting the right parrot for your family, your lifestyle, and your budget. A good rescue will help set you up with the parrot who fits your needs best. It is unfortunate that so many people purchase birds that do not fit in their lives and homes; these birds very often end up either as cage decorations or in a rescue looking for a home that does fit.

When adopting a parrot you need some basic things:

1. A contract. Do not take a bird without something in writing saying it is your bird now.

2. A history. Learn as much as is possible to find out about your new additions past.

3. Medical records. Be sure to have all the available records for your new additions health checks, and any treatment for injury/illness that has been done.

I also recommend adopting from a shelter or rescues that will give you follow up care. You may run into problems where you will need to call and ask for assistance, a good rescue will be there for you.

Many birds come with a cage when adopted, but often the cage is not appropriate, or it is not what you would prefer to see your new best friend living in.
