Meyer's Parrot
(Poicephalus Meyeri)
Meyer’s are the smallest of the Poicephalus family with weights at 80-125 grams and lengths of 8-9 inches. Their life span is 25-35 years. They are the most common Poicephalus parrot in the wild and the second most common member of this family in captivity. They are native to Central and Eastern Africa.
Prices for these darlings run anywhere from $300.00 to $450.00. Meyer's parrots are beautifully colored small parrots that have a reputation for having an affectionate, charming personality with little tendency to develop aggression. They are sometimes called a mellow, laid back Senegal. Senegal and Meyer's have many similarities; body language, vocal reproduction and at first glance they may appear to be the same bird, just in different colors. The Meyer's Parrot has a green belly and bright, turquoise rump. As they mature they generally get yellow markings on their heads, shoulders and thighs. One of the more striking features are their sharp, orange irises. Senegals are thought to be one person birds while Meyer's are more apt to adjust to multiple individuals, and the Meyer's make wonderful family companions.
Meyer's Parrots are famous for laying on their backs and doing silly things with their feet. Although not known for their talking ability, the Meyer's will pick up a few words and quite a few other sounds. These birds make almost exclusively pleasant sounds. They are considered to be the quite parrot and would make a great companion for someone living in an apartment or someone who is worried about what the neighbors might think.
Proper cage size is about 20X20X28 inches with horizontal bars. Bar spacing should be 3/4 inches to avoid injuries.
