Salmon-Crested or Moluccan Cockatoos

(Cacatua Moluccensis)

Often called the loudest of companion cockatoos these stunning beauties are amazing companions. With magnificent voices, and extremely long lives the person who shares his life with one is making a huge commitment. Unfortunately, many Moluccan cockatoos end up in sanctuary or rescue situations because the people who purchase them are not prepared to meet their sizeable needs. Unlike most other companion parrots this one will scream in the dark if the mood takes him. Success living with a Moluccan requires that you are willing to provide an extremely large space in your home and life for this bird, are willing to live with ear shattering screams, and you have amazing patience. Those who do well with these parrots are amazing people who's dedication to their parrots well being should be complimented daily. Keep in mind that Moluccans like other cockatoos can quickly develop self-destructive behaviors if not kept properly, some going as far as to self mutilate. While these birds are very social that does not mean that one should cuddle them twenty-four hours a day, behavior like that could result in the parrot becoming extremely demanding and incapable of socializing without you. Generally these birds weigh in at around 850 grams, and reach 20 inches or a bit more in length. They are not small parrots and definitely not suited to a timid keeper.

The voice of a Moluccan Cockatoo is designed to carry across miles so that all flock members can be reached when needed. This voice in a home setting can actually cause hearing loss in humans. The Moluccan Cockatoo needs to be given daily outlets for this voice, in appropriate situations and these birds require an amazing amount of patience.
