Mitred Conure

(Aratina Mitrata)

These beautiful birds look a lot like their Cherry-Headed cousins, but there are two great ways to tell the difference. First, the Mitred Conure is one of the largest of the family, reaching up to 17 inches in length. Second, the red patches on a Mitred's head are broken up, and no where near as sold as found on the Cherry-Headed. When very young, before about the second molt, it can be very hard indeed to tell these beautiful birds apart. Domestic handraised Mitred Conures are quickly becoming popular companion parrots, due to their fantastic personalitys and talking ability, but they do have a reputation of being pushy birds and will require lots of hands on attention to keep them at peak companion potential. Like all conures, the Mitred can scream its displeasure for all to hear, but they generally limit themselves to normal screaming times, morning and evening.

Thank you so much Amber, for sharing this photo of Isaac. He is so handsome, and so lucky to have been rescued by you!
