Lories and Lorikeets

Family Loriinae

Lories and Lorikeets are beautiful Australia natives, who have worked their way into the hearts and homes of many. These medium sized birds have special feeding needs, as they subsist on a diet of nectar. They also eat fruits, pollen, and the occasional insect along with a few other foods. Their wonderful brush tipped tongue is made to help them feed properly, and they will not fare well in a home that is not committed to their special needs diet.

Lories and Lorikeets are known to be nippy, aggressive birds, but when in the right home with the right people this is easily managed. One should not let a Lory or Lorikeet 'hang out' with another bird, as its territoriality could easily cause damage unless strictly supervised. Lories and Lorikeets live in extremely large flocks in the wild, and do well with other birds of their own species.

The main difference between Lories and Lorikeets lies in the tail. While a Lory has a shorter blunt shaped tail, the Lorikeet has a more slender and longer pointed tail. The Lory is also a more stocky bird in body, while the Lorikeet is more slender.

A very special thank you, Ken R, for taking and sharing these amazing photographs of Wild Lories. We all dream of just having tea on your back porch and sharing such amazing sights with you!
