Major Mitchell's or Leadbeater Cockatoo

(Cacatua Leadbeatri)

One of the most eye catching cockatoos around, the Leadbeaters is beauty packaged in feathers. Uncommon as companion parrots, and hard to find in the United States, these beautiful birds have a reputation for not settling into home settings well. There are of course exceptions, as there are with any parrot, but for most of this gorgeous species of cockatoo the human home is just not a happy place. The incredible red, yellow, and white crests are just part of the attraction to these parrots, they also are known to call loudly only on infrequent occasions. Sometimes called Major Mitchell's cockatoos after the explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell (1772-1855) these impressive parrots leave their mark in the mind and heart of everyone who meets them.

Seeing a Leadbeaters cockatoo in person can inspire immediate feelings of love for anyone who enjoys cockatoos. One should keep in mind that while beautiful they are birds who will be an enormous amount of work in a home setting and require a deep commitment in order to remain healthy and happy as companions. It is becoming more common to find these beautiful wonders at birdshows, or breeders who are actively producing many clutches of them, and any buyer must take the time to investigate the genetics of the young bird to be sure it was not produced by family breeding and has two unrelated parent birds.
