Jake is a severe macaw who came to us from another rescue that was closing. We have very little history on him, and know only what we have discovered since he has arrived at Feathered Family.
Jake came to us with a very severe yeast infection, which took a very long time to treat properly. During his treatment he had to get used to being restrained, and he is now very comfortable with human hands restraining him, much more so than most birds.
Jake lost the tips of a couple toes recently, the toes were still at the start of healing when he arrived at Feathered Family. His grip is a bit off because of this, he has not yet adjusted to the loss. Birds can and do adjust to this kind of problem given time, and we expect that Jake will recover full balance and grip.
Jake has issues with other birds, he wants to be with them, even if they are not friendly with him. Jake just really loves other birds. He was in a large flight with large birds at the other rescue and the large birds often abused him, but it did not diminish his love for them. We have to keep a close eye on him to be sure he does not get to other birds and become injured.
Jake likes humans, but isnt sure of us yet. He wants attention but is known for also biting the hand that gives it to him. He can be extremely stubborn and extremely loud, but on the flip side he can be very cuddly and very fun to play with, depending on his mood.
We enjoy Jake at Feathered Family, but do believe it will take a special home with a great deal of patience and knowledge of bird behavior for him to be able to be adopted. He makes progress daily, so things may change in time, but at this moment we are not in any hurry to place him as we believe he has a lot of progress to make before he will be ready.
