Hyacinth Macaw

(Anodorhychus hyacinthinus)

Stunning and huge the Hyacinth Macaw is a prized companion parrot for those who can afford their hefty pricetags. The Hyacinth, along with just a couple others, are the only large macaws that do not have the bare face patch, and these parrots are also without the uropygial gland (preening gland). Being natural acrobats, they love to run along the ground and hop, and people have even reported seeing these majestic birds chase their own tails. Because of their extreme size and strength caging these birds is complicated to say the least, you'll need to find one that is guaranteed specificly for Hyacinth's. Also, due to their difference in physical makeup from most other parrots finding a vet with experience dealing with them is a must. Nicknamed "The Gentle Blue Giant" for their easygoing personalities, but do not be fooled, the Hyacinth has destructive potential and a very loud voice.
