Feathered Family Inc.

Parrot Rescue and Adoption, Erie CO

Homer is a sweet seventeen year old Indian Ringneck Parakeet. His prior family grew with the addition of a baby and they no longer had the time to care for him properly, so they did the loving thing and sent him to us so he could find a new family to give him the attention he deserves.

Homer has been attacked by a cat before, and he plucks his neck in the area that the cat broke the skin. If you look at him carefully you can see the scars from the attack. He does not pluck any other area.

Homer is an unusual ringneck in that he does not bite. Ever. However, this is a trade off, because he is also terrified of hands and runs from them. We are working with him very slowly on this, to teach him to be more comfortable so that eventually he can learn to step up and have more interaction with humans.

Homer also prefers men to women, though he does tolerate women very well. He has a lovely voice, and enjoys telling his reflection that it is a pretty bird. We agree!

Homer will be with us at Feathered Family until his behavioral issues are resolved. During his stay he is enjoying his time with other ringnecks very much and we think that he would greatly love to find a home with another ringneck he could be friends with when it is time for him to go home.

Homer is ready to begin looking for a new home, however he is a very special needs bird. He maintains his fear of hands. It has become far less acute and he makes steps every day, but we do not believe that he will ever really enjoy hands touching him. He is also highly social and thrives on contact with other birds. However, he is a very gentle bird and will not defend himself against a more aggressive bird, so he must be carefully supervised in order to protect him.

We really love Homer at Feathered Family, we find him to be one of the sweetest birds we have met to date. His issues do not make him "damaged" in our eyes, but unique. He is welcome to stay with us as long as it takes to find a forever home, even if that translates into forever with us. We will not rush his placement, we will not send him into a home without a great deal of bird experience, and we will not place him in a home with larger birds due to his safety issues. Homer is an IRN and he is capable of a great deal of noise, so he will not be placed in an apartment. His mental and physical health are first and foremost to us, so please do not apply to adopt him unless you honestly feel that you can meet all of his special needs.
