Parrot Rescue and Adoption, Erie CO

HelpNeeded

If you need to find a new home for your bird, and wish to relinquish it to Feathered Family Parrot Rescue please fill out the form below, or contact us via e-mail at featheredfamily@comcast.net . Please be sure to provide your full name, e-mail address, and telephone number so we can contact you.

Once you complete this application for assistance we also will need you to complete a Parrot Relinquishment Form, and a Client Bird History, both forms which we need in order to accept your bird here at Feathered Family. You may obtain both of these forms at THIS webpage, in either PDF or MSWord format.

We prefer that you provide a veterinarian's statement that your bird has tested negative for Chlamydia, PBFD, and Polyoma, and has had a health exam within 90 days of the date you relinquish. If you cannot provide this we require that you pay the costs for our vet to provide this testing for your bird, as we must look to the safety of every bird in our care.

We do make special exceptions for those in dire financial circumstances, please let us know if your need our assistance with the costs of medical testing. We try to do this when possible, but our funding is limited so we cannot guarantee that we will be able to assist you with testing and veterinary costs.

Please keep in mind that Feathered Family specializes in working with special needs birds. While every bird deserves a safe place to be our focus is on those birds who may have trouble being placed elsewhere. Feather plucking, aggression, fear behaviors, screaming, and other unwanted behaviors can keep birds from finding a home, and we are dedicated to helping birds overcome these issues in order to find a safe forever home. We will consider any bird in need, but our main goal remains caring for these special birds who may not have any other option than us.

Feathered Family has a limited capacity and at times may be too full to take your bird. If this is the case we try to refer you to another rescue that may have room, or if your bird is suitable we will try to assist you in a home to home adoption of your bird. We do have a waiting list for intakes, and birds are brought in house in order of need. Please understand that the birds currently in our care must be our number one priority and we cannot take more than we can care for. We do not guarantee that we will take any bird, each bird is evaluated on a case by case basis.

We will take any bird that is in imminent danger of euthanasia, Feathered Family is here to make sure all parrots have a safe place to be.

This Relinquishment application is for Feathered Family Inc., located in Colorado. If you need help outside of Colorado you may email us or visit http://www.birdadoption.org/ but we cannot guarantee placement. Thank you.

We at Feathered Family do understand that sometimes it can be an emergency to relinquish a bird (eviction, family or medical emergency, etc), and we wish to help you as quickly as possible. Please let us know if your case is urgent and we will try to do what we can to assist you as quickly as possible. However, please keep in mind that we do have a waiting list of birds needing assistance.

We also want to take a moment to address the pain and guilt that comes with relinquishment:

Most often parrots who are relinquished are birds who are not doing well in their current home. Every owner suffers the pain and guilt of giving up a beloved companion, and we want to reassure you that what you feel is normal. Caring about our birds sometimes means finding new situations for them where they can have their needs met, their special behavior issues worked with, or where they can be with other birds. Loving our birds means that we will do what is needed in order to assure that they are happy and healthy, even if that means sending them to someone else who can meet their needs. We do understand, and we want you to know that we do care and are willing to try to help you work through your feelings about relinquishment.
