Mexican Red Headed Amazon or Green Cheeked Amazon
Amazona Viridigenalis
These darlings of the Amazon world are highly popular in the pet trade. Well known for their whistling and devotion to a beloved person they are wonderful companion parrots. In the wild they can be found from the Northern tip of Mexico all the way through lower Mexico, hence the name. Measuring in at only thirteen inches long the Green Cheeked Amazon is one of the smaller Amazons, but don't let its size fool you. They are just as packed with personality as their larger cousins and they have very powerful voices as well.
Because they are not known as one of the "Hot Three" Amazons, and are generally of more docile temperament during breeding season than some of the other Amazons they are extremely popular among people who want the Amazon personalities without taking on the possible dangers of some of the other species.
As with any Amazon they are usually very good eaters and have a tendency to get fat if not given enough exorcize. A fat bird is not a healthy one, so it is important to watch their diet and be sure to give plenty of opportunity to play and flap.
