Goffin's Cockatoo
(Cacatua goffini)
Goffin's Cockatoos might be smaller than other cockatoos, but there's a lot of parrot packed into that little body. Known to scream loudly, in the dark, and during sex these little guys were not put on this planet to be quiet. Extremely active parrots Goffin's need full sized cages, ones that would seem more suitable to an Umbrella or Moluccan, in order to be able to play enough to satisfy themselves. Goffin's are also known to be daring escape artists, and I've heard tales of some that have learned to pick locks! With a reputation for being cautious neurotic birds who develop extreme bonds many people overlook the potential of these darlings. Usually 12 to 13 inches in length, and around 350 grams, the Goffin's is a smaller parrot, but has a full sized intelligence. Accomplished speakers, and wonderful acrobats, who have been nick-named by some "Class Clowns".
The goffins cockatoo is not the bird for those who people who like to live an "orderly" life. These wonderful little birds are packed with energy and will find an outlet for it, if one is not provided for them. They bond tightly to their chosen person and suffer from not being able to spend enough time with the person they love if that person becomes less available. We highly recommend that anyone who is adding a Goffins Cockatoo to their life plan for the future, so the bird does not suffer during some major life change. It is also important to note that the Goffins Cockatoo are known for neurotic behaviors when their needs are not met properly, such as feather abuse, self mutilation, uncontrollable screaming, and other undesirable behaviors. Living with a Goffins can be a wonderful and rewarding experience for those who go into it with open eyes and prepared to do what it takes to fulfill the needs of the bird for a lifetime.
