Greater, Medium, and Lesser
Citron and Sulphur Crested Cockatoos
This family of four subspecies features a bright lemon crest that curves forward away from the body of the parrot. Highly prized as companion parrots it is sad that they are exterminated as agricultural pests in their native regions. Known for their acrobatics and antics, which sometimes include full upright crest displays while hanging completely upside down, these parrots are charmers. While the Greater Sulphur Crested has the reputation for being the calmest of this group, one must take into account that the entire group is known to resemble hyperactive children. Unfortunately there are many breeders who are cross-breeding this group without thought, diluting the pure genetics of each individual in the group. These birds range from 700 to 950 grams in weight, and 40 to 55 centimeters in length commonly.
We at Feathered Family have met an unfortunately high number of these birds with behavioral or physical issues. They are known for plucking, mutilation, aggression, and other unwanted behaviors. Anyone who wishes to share their home with a Crested Cockatoo needs to be fully aware of the potential for serious behavior issues and committed to learning everything possible so as to try to prevent them. They are beautiful birds with special needs and only those people who are willing to go that "extra mile" for them should even consider adding one to their family.

Thank you to Ginny for allowing us to use these beautiful photos of Bacardi. Isnt she incredible?
