Cracker is a very special Nanday Conure. She came to us via an animal seizure, as part of a large group. Cracker was caged with Dez the quaker and another Nanday conure who died before we could intercede and get the birds to Feathered Family. We know that the Nanday pair were named Cracker and Cookie, and we decided to call our little survivor Cracker since we already had a resident named Cookie. She does not seem to mind in the least.
Cracker was not only severely underweight when she arrived, but she had a chunk of metal (not a bird band) wrapped tightly around her leg, which had dug deeply into her leg and was slowly amputating it. Upon removal of the metal her leg was in very bad shape and we were not sure if she would be able to keep her leg, or if it would be necessary to amputate it because of the damage. Cracker is a trooper though, and she has done extremely well with the damaged leg. The foot does not move, but she uses it like a crutch and gets around very well regardless. She cannot stand on one foot like many birds, which means she cannot hold food to eat it, but we give her a special diet that does not require her to hold her food.
Cracker is very loving and giving with those she knows and trusts. Her trust must be earned, but she is willing to allow humans to try. She does not like to be pet or touched with hands (though she will allow her foot to be touched, as we must to monitor blood flow) but loves kisses and to snuggle against a cheek. She is silly and loves to play games, and loves to give kisses while making sweet kissing noises. Cracker is fully flighted to allow her to catch herself if her foot does not support her properly and she falls.
Cracker is caged with Dez the quaker still, as he is highly dependent on her. He is not tame, and is very hand shy, but will not outright attack unless he feels you are threatening Cracker. She comes out to play often, but Dez is not yet willing to do so.
Cracker is our hero here at Feathered Family, and is often called "Hero" as a nickname. She could have been a bitter unhappy bird with the things she has been through, but instead she is a fun outgoing little girl who just wants to love and be loved in return. Finding the right adoptive home for her will be difficult because of Dez, we do not want to seperate them as we feel it would not be good for either bird.
