Blue Throat Macaw, Canide Macaw, or Wagler's Macaw
Ara glaucogularis
The beautiful and rare Blue Throated Macaw is one of the birds we should be working every day to ensure the survival of the species. Another of the macaws that is extremely rare, both in the wild and captivity, these would be a huge loss to the world if they were to become extinct. These are one of the large macaws, but not the largest of the species. Their incredible blue throats and facial stripes make them almost instantly recognizeable, though they are on occasion mistaken for their slightly larger cousin, the Blue and Gold Macaw.
In the wild these birds are very nearly extinct already, and some estimates say that there are as few as only 200 left. Captive breeding programs may be the only hope for the future of this species. The loss of the Blue Throated Macaw would be a great loss for all of humanity. These birds are known for gentle personalities, and for also being very mechanically inclined. It has been reported that they can easily dissassemble a cage if they desire to do so.
Blue Throat Macaws in mating programs are not docile, and should not be treated as companion parrots. This does not mean that we should not breed them, as the survival of this species is far more important than the companion potential of any one bird.

Our thanks to Gary and Janyce, for allowing us to show photos of Mango. He is but one lovely member of their incredible and beautiful flock of macaws.
