Congo African Grey

(Psittacus Erithacus Erithacus)

Thanks to Dr. Pepperburg the Congo African Grey is now one of the most popular companion parrots in the world. Known for its exceptional talking abilities, and now people are beggining to belive that these birds actually know what they are saying and use words in context. The Congo Grey is the larger of the two subspeices, and has a bright red tail. Not generally a loud parrot, these wonderful creatures will talk your ear off once they learn to speak, but screaming seems to be something very few of them indulge in. CAG's need to be properly socialized in order to avoid some of the more dangerous anxiety behaviors, like feather picking, and extreme fearfullness.

Living with these wonders can be trying and enjoyable at the same time. They require stimulation of both mind and body in order to maintain their health. One must also consider their ability to learn new words, and consider what you say before you speak, too many of these lovely parrots are given up due to vulgar vocabularies.  Reputed to bond closely with one person, the Congo African Grey will not bend to your will on this matter, the parrot will pick who it bonds to for reasons sometimes unknown to any human. Taking an African Grey into your home is a responsibility, that you will love and care for it, with its ever changing needs, for the next 50 plus years.
