Buffon's Macaw, or Great Green Macaw

Ara Ambigua

The Buffon's Macaw is a gorgeous example of a species on the edge of extinction. They are extremely rare in the wild, and also in captivity. These birds are sometimes mistaken by the novice as a Military Macaw, but with experience is it simple to tell the two apart. The Buffon's Macaw is a large bird, with bright light green plumage.

Known among aviculturists as a very gentle and loving bird, they are highly treasured by those who share their lives with them. It is said that they will remain tame and loving to humans even when in a breeding program, which is very unusual. Buffon's are a species we need to protect, both in the wild an in captivity with good breeding programs so that we do not loose these incredible beautiful birds forever.

A very special thank you to Gary and Janyce for sharing the above photos of Pinkerton (Pinkie), a young Buffon's who is part of their incredible beautiful flock.
