Blue & Gold Macaw
(Ara Ararauna)
The most prolific, least expensive(of the large Macaws), and most common companion Macaw, the Blue and Gold. With a reputation of being a good talker, who speaks in a clear easy to understand voice its no wonder that these beautiful birds have won so many hearts. Unfortunately, because of their relatively low prices Blue and Golds become impulse purchases all too often and are added to households that are just not ready for the challenges of these big birds. That leads to birds being passed from home too home all too often, and can damage the disposition of these normally even tempered parrots. As with all Macaws the Blue and Gold's are known to occasionally test their limits, and make sure of their placement in the flock or family. In the right home, with the right caretakers, Blue and Gold's make excellent companion parrots.
Blue and Gold macaws are also said to be more prone to respiratory problems if exposed to powder down birds than other macaws, and one should take very special care if adding a macaw to a home with cockatiels, cockatoos, or African greys. Often these respiratory problems will lie dormant for a long time, but once they show they are very severe and birds have died from them. Not all macaws react to powder down, and it is unknown why the birds that do react have such fierce reactions.
