Those Amazing Amazons...

Long popular as companion parrots, the Amazons are well known birds. Dependable, steady, loveable, these are just a few things said about these wonderful parrots. With mostly green bodies, short tails, and (usually) good temperaments its understandable how Amazons became as popular as they are today. It doesn't hurt their case at all that they come in an amazing variety, from the yellow naped to the St. Vincent's Amazon. I firmly belive that theres an Amazon out there that could happily live in almost every household in the world.

Amazons are adaptable. They seem to take changes in lifestyle better than most parrots, and do it with grace. Long known for their fondness of singing songs, they entertain with enthusiasm, and make a lot of friends along the way. Take the time to learn a little more about the incredible Amazons, you may find that one is perfect for your family.

A special note on Amazons:  Double-Yellow Headed, Blue Front and Yellow-Naped Amazons are called the "Hot Three". These birds are especially known for sexual agression, taking it to levels that many people have a hard time believing. All species of birds can bite, but the hot three take this to another level. They can become completely out of control when sexual, biting and biting and biting again in a trance where they do not seem to see or even hear what is going on around them. They have broken bones, opened skin enough to expose bone, and disfigured faces.

The time of aggression varies by individual bird, but can generally be expected between three and twelve years of age. During this time you will find one or two years of extreme sexual agression, once this is past they will generally settle down with little or no aggression shown. Before owning an Amazon it is important to learn their body language, so that you can be aware of an impending attack, and be prepared for one. The most important thing you can do for your own saftey is to NEVER allow a companion Amazon on your shoulder.
