Adopting from Feathered Family:

Hi!

We are thrilled you would like to adopt a parrot from us. We do have strict adoption procedures, but you will find that it is worth it. Not only do you get the best bird for your home, but also the birds get the best home for them! Please understand we do NOT adopt outside of Colorado. In order to be sure that the bird has the proper home and that the adopters have the proper support we need to make sure each bird remains close to our offices so that we can do everything in our power to make this home the last home the bird is ever in.

If you do not see the bird species you wish to adopt listed at this time, its still a good idea to fill out the basic application now, so that when the species you'd like comes in you have been pre-screened. Please understand that just because you wish to adopt a certain species of parrot that does not mean that we will adopt that species to you if we feel that it would not be best for your home. Our decisions on adoption are final and not negotiable.

Please note that we do not allow visits with the birds if you have not been pre-screened. This is both for the physical and emotional health of the birds as well as for security reasons. We ask you to understand that the birds are our first concern and each time we expose them to someone there is a potential for germs, or for a reaction to the individual in a behavioral manner. Our job is not only to rehabilitate them but to protect them while they are with us.

    • You must be at least 18 years of age.
    • You must live in the state of Colorado.
    • You must not have purchased, adopted or otherwise acquired another bird within the past 18 months.
    • You must have the financial means to support the bird you wish to adopt. If you are unemployed we will be asking how you support yourself and would support the bird.
    • You must supply both veterinarian references as well as personal references.
    • You must be willing to participate in bonding visits with the bird if your pre-screening is approved.

Assisted Adoption Program

Feathered Family also offers assistance with home to home adoptions, cutting out the middleman when possible. This means that we help people who are looking for a home for their bird connect with people who are looking to adopt a bird. The adoption is done privately between you and the current owner, but we are happy to help you connect when possible. Please let us know when filling out your adoption pre-screening if you wish to be included in this program. Parties who agree to be included in this program will have their information from the pre-screening application forwarded to parties who are looking to adopt out a bird, when it is appropriate. Please be sure you understand this before agreeing to the assisted adoption program.
